Notre Dame stripped of 21 victories in cheating scandal

Over the course of two academic school years from 2011 to 2013, a student athletics trainer partially or entirely completed academic assignments for two football players, and gave six other players extra academic benefits. The NCAA said the woman "continued to provide impermissible academic benefits to football student-athletes for a full year after she graduated" and was in her first year of law school elsewhere. Kelly and the school cried foul about the NCAA's decision to vacate 21 victories from the 2012 and 2013 seasons. Unfortunately for the Irish, the NCAA will not vacate their blowout loss to Alabama in that season's national title game.

Notre Dame does not contest that Level II academic violations occurred, or the probation penalty and $5,000 fine levied by the NCAA.

Brian Kelly guided Notre Dame to a 12-1 finish in 2012.

If the NCAA erases all 21 Notre Dame victories, the Irish would fall from the school with the second-most wins in NCAA history behind MI (935) to fifth place with 875.

As a fellow Catholic that believes in karma, if Notre Dame getting punished for what it has preached in academics over athletics and their high student-athlete graduate rate for so long, then I don't' know what else is. I think you guys are confusing this statement with win-loss record. "I'm proud of the people that represented us here at Notre Dame during this time", Kelly said.

In March, Notre Dame beat MI and Stephen F. Austin here to advance in the NCAA Tournament, where the Fighting Irish went on to the Elite Eight. That's No. 1. No. 2, student-on-student cheating, nobody implicated.

The decision by the NCAA stems from lingering academic issues that were investigated that included the so-called "Frozen Five;" KeiVarae Russell, DaVaris Daniels, Kendall Moore, Ishaq Williams, and Eilar Hardy.

The answer, according to Rutgers football spokesman Hasim Phillips, is no. Phillips said he checked in with the university's compliance department and "there's no change for Rutgers" regarding Notre Dame's vacated win. The NCAA agreed across the board with that finding, and it was clearly excessive. This academic piece probably strengthens what I've been doing relative to advocating for our student-athletes and academic support staff relative to them being successful.

The trainer, unnamed by the NCAA at this time, will be slapped with a two-year show cause penalty, essentially preventing employment within the NCAA member schools for the next two years. "We still beat Oklahoma".

Here's how much responsibility Kelly believes lies with the head coach for this particular scandal. We still beat all those teams, so you can put an asterisk next to it. We still beat all those teams. I love the fact that we're coming back for the ACC Tournament. So you can put an asterisk next to it.

"That's why I coach basketball - because it is inside, and we don't have no rain delays or weather problems or anything like that, " Louisiana-Lafayette coach Garry Brodhead said.
