To make matters even more impressive, the actor beat outAndrew Garfield for Hacksaw Ridge, Joel Edgerton for Loving, Viggo Mortensen for Captain Fantastic, and Denzel Washington for Fences.

Congratulations to Casey Affleck and the whole Manchester By The Sea team!

"Despite how I might think I'm in charge at my house, my kids give me permission to do this", Affleck explained, hinting at some of the controversy - ignited by allegations of sexual harassment - that has hounded him through this awards season.

"To Matt Damon, for giving me the opportunity, your support, your friendship", Affleck said. He also quoted Denzel Washington's 2000 Golden Globes acceptance speech.

Manchester by the Sea tells the story of Lee Chandler (Casey Affleck), an uncle, who takes custody of his teenage nephew after Chandler's brother and his nephew's father passes away. "Matt, I suspect you won't be passing on any movies I might be near", he joked. Affleck is now the frontrunner for the Best Actor award there as well.

This marks the actor's first Golden Globe victory, having previously been nominated in 2008 for his supporting performance in The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford.
